Castile soaps are an amazing natural cleanser with some special benefits. Here’s what it is and why you should think about using this safe, hydrating soap.

Since castile soap gets its cleansing power from plant-based oils, you not only get a deep clean, but you also get to reap all of the healthy nutrients found within. Don’t believe us? Check out these amazing castile soap benefits:

Gentle cleanse without the toxins. Virtually all soaps use toxic sulfates to get that lather we’re all accustomed to, but castile soap lathers naturally - no chemicals necessary. Most soaps are nothing more than strong drying agents, but castile soap actually cleanses and protects thanks to oleuropein - a compound with potent antibacterial effects.
Safe for sensitive skin. Since castile soap is made from safe, simple plant oils, it is considered safe for even the most sensitive skin types.
It can help oily, acne-prone skin. The oils found in castile soap penetrate pores with their antibacterial agents, helping clean your skin without drying it out. While it is more alkaline than we recommend, some people have success using it to balance their skin’s pH to reduce acne. We recommend using something balanced to your skin's natural 5.5 pH rather than overcompensating, but everyone's skin is different.
Smooth and soothe dry, irritated skin. Plant oils, especially olive oil, are rich in monounsaturated fatty acids. These healthy fats help replenish the water level within the epidermis, resulting in supple, glowing skin. Plus, it doesn’t strip your skin’s natural oils, so no worries about dry, flaky skin.
Naturally hydrating. The process of making oil-based soap results in a byproduct known as glycerin, which most synthetic soaps filter out. That’s a shame considering glycerin absorbs water from surrounding air, working to moisturize your skin as naturally as possible. Fortunately, castile soap retains its glycerin content.
No gunked up pores. Made from olive oil, castile soap lets your skin breathe and encourages the natural process of shedding dead skin cells. While synthetic soaps can irritate and block pores, castile soap keeps them clean and clear.
Natural free radical protection. Olive oil is rich in antioxidants such as vitamins A and E. Regular use of castile soap can help protect against skin cell degeneration and can therefore delay the appearance of wrinkles and accelerated aging.
Ease eczema, psoriasis & more. Nutrient-rich olive oil also contains a highly anti-inflammatory compound called oleocanthal. In fact, its anti-inflammatory action has been compared to that of Ibuprofen. As such, castile soap can help reduce inflammation - the source of many of our most bothersome skin conditions.

How to Use Castile Soap + A DIY Facial Cleanser
using castile soap

Castile soap uses are practically endless, which is one of its greatest strengths!

The number one tip we can provide for using castile soap is to remember that a little goes a long way. In fact, modern castile soap is almost always concentrated, so a little dollop can pack quite the cleansing punch.

One of our favorite ways to use castile soap is as a baby wash. Since it’s free from chemicals and harsh detergents, castile soap is the perfect way to bathe your baby. In fact, a 2008 report in Pediatric Dermatology found that olive oil was safe enough to use on premature infants due to its incredible gentle nature.

Pure castile soap is perfectly safe to use on its own, but it can also be mixed with any number of ingredients to form natural replacements for products all throughout your home.

More than just for your skin, castile soap can be used as:

Dish soap
Window cleaner
Laundry detergent
Toilet cleaner
Produce rinse
Pet shampoo
Makeup tool cleaner
Plant spray
Shaving cream
And so much more
Foaming soap
If you own a foaming soap dispenser, you can refill it with a homemade formula. Mix 2 tbsp liquid castile soap, ½ tsp olive or fractionated coconut oil, and a few drops of your preferred essential oil. Top up with water, gently mix, and it’s ready for use.

Face and body wash
Wet hands and face, add 2-3 drops concentrated liquid soap to hands and rub to lather. Apply to face and rinse well. Add a squirt of concentrated liquid soap to a wet washcloth or sponge and rub all over your body in the shower or bath. You can also make your own body wash solution using castile soap, honey, olive oil, and essential oils.

Makeup remover
Mix equal parts castile soap, fractionated coconut oil or almond oil, and witch hazel to make an effective homemade makeup remover that’s also moisturizing. Soak reusable cloth pads or cotton rounds in the solution and wipe gently over eyes and face. Rinse with water.

Shaving
Castile soap lathers beautifully, which makes it ideal for shaving. Wet your hands and skin, add 4-5 drops of concentrated soap to your hands and rub until foamy. Apply to legs, underarms, or face, then shave and rinse.

Homemade baby wipes
These are a greener alternative to sewage-clogging, microfiber-shedding wipes. Use ½ roll sturdy paper towels (preferably recycled) and put in an airtight container, i.e. old baby wipes box or plastic ice cream tub. Combine 2 tbsp liquid castile soap with 2 cups hot water, 1 tbsp almond oil and 1 tbsp lotion. Soak the towels in the liquid and wait 10 minutes before using. Full recipe here.

Decongestant
This is most effective with peppermint- or eucalyptus-scented liquid soap. Fill a bowl with hot, near-boiling water and add 2-3 drops of soap. Hold your head over the bowl to inhale the steam; put a towel over your head for a more concentrated effect. Your nasal passages should clear quickly.

Pet shampoo
Wet your dog’s hair and then add a squirt of liquid soap. Work it in with your hands for a generous lather, then rinse thoroughly.

Plant care
If you’re having trouble with bugs on your houseplants, mix 1 tbsp castile soap with 1 quart water. Spray this on the leaves to deter the pests.

Brush cleaner
You can clean your makeup brushes and water-based paint brushes using castile soap. Add a squirt of concentrated soap to a bowl and top up with warm water. Add brushes and let soak for a few minutes until softened, then rub gently. Rinse until water runs clear. Alternatively, for makeup brushes, put 2-3 drops of soap into your wet palm. Rub the brush head around your hand, then rinse and reshape the bristles.

Produce rinse
If you’re concerned about dirt and bacteria on fresh fruits and vegetables, combine 1 tsp castile soap (preferably citrus) with 1 gallon water. Swish the vegetables around for a minute, then transfer to a towel to dry.

Benefits
Castile soap has become tremendously popular in recent years. Eco-minded shoppers are attracted to its environmental profile, its affordability, and the ethical production standards of certain manufacturers. Here's why they like it so much.

Eco-friendliness
The appeal of castile soap lies in the fact that it cleans as effectively as many conventional, chemical-laden formulas, minus the health and environmental hazards. The soap is biodegradable and free from synthetic preservatives, detergents and foaming agents. For anyone wishing to reduce their personal chemical burden or wanting to minimize children’s or pets’ exposure to harsh cleaning substances, castile soap is a good choice. The fact that it’s made entirely from vegetable oils, rather than animal fats, is attractive to vegan users. Dr. Bronner’s liquid soap containers are made from 100 percent post-consumer recycled plastic.
